For centuries, people perceived mountains as nothing more than magnificent heights—immutable behemoths of stone and frost. Nonetheless, contemporary geology has unveiled a far more dynamic reality. A captivating similarity between ancient texts and contemporary science is the depiction of mountains as "pegs" or "stakes" (awtaad).

This article examines the geological concept of Isostasy and its correlation with the Quranic depiction of mountains offering stability to the Earth's crust.

The Quranic Perspective: Mountains as Pegs

In the Quran, Allah (SWT) mentions the practical roles of mountains in numerous verses. One of the most notable is located in Surah An-Naba':

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا

"Have We not made the earth as a bed, and the mountains as pegs?" (Quran 78:6-7)

The term "Awtaad" (the plural of watad) denotes a stake or peg, similar to those employed to secure a tent. A peg is defined by a small part being visible above the ground, while a larger part is pushed deep into the soil to ensure stability.

The Geological Reality: The Theory of Isostasy

In the mid-19th century, geologists started to understand that mountains are not merely positioned on the Earth's crust; they are intricately integrated within it. This resulted in the creation of the Isostasy Theory.

What is Isostasy?

Isostasy refers to the condition of gravitational balance between the Earth's lithosphere (the crust) and the asthenosphere (the semi-fluid layer beneath). Picture an iceberg adrift in the sea: for the peak of the iceberg to remain above water, a significantly larger volume of ice must lie below the surface to offer support.

Deep Roots

Geological studies, specifically the Airy Hypothesis, suggest that the Earth’s crust is thicker under mountain ranges. Just like a tent peg, a mountain has a "root" that extends deep into the mantle.

  • The Visible Peak: The part we see and climb.

  • The Deep Root: A massive underground extension that can reach up to 10-15 times the height of the visible mountain.

These roots anchor the continental plates and prevent them from shaking or sliding erratically over the fluid mantle layer. This mirrors the description in Surah An-Nahl (16:15):

وَأَلْقَىٰ فِي الْأَرْضِ رَوَاسِيَ أَن تَمِيدَ بِكُمْ...

"And He has set up on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you..."


Why the "Peg" Analogy is Scientifically Accurate

The choice of the word "peg" is intellectually profound for three primary reasons:

  1. Shape: Like a peg, a mountain is wedge-shaped with a deep vertical extension.

  2. Function: Just as pegs stabilize a tent against the wind, mountains stabilize the Earth's lithosphere against the internal pressures of the mantle.

  3. Proportion: Science confirms that the majority of a mountain's mass is hidden underground, exactly like a stake driven into the earth.

Conclusion

The intersection of 7th-century revelation and contemporary geophysics provides an intriguing view of the balance between faith and reason. The Theory of Isostasy describes the mechanical necessity for mountain roots, while the Quranic verse offers a succinct, impactful metaphor that has endured through time. Recognizing the Earth as a harmonized, delicately calibrated system highlights that the "firmly fixed" mountains are more than mere references—they are the quiet pillars of our planet.
